Mission

What is the "NEW LIFE COMMUNITY"? This program provides transitional housing and educational training for homeless and jobless single-parent families of the Greater Cleveland Area. All areas of life (including parenting, job skills, self-awareness and many more) are addressed. Please see further information on flyers on the table in the Chapel area. The Grace Mission Team are looking to see if members of the Church might be interested in helping this program. We are looking for members that might help prepare 1-2 appartments for new families to move in. This would happen only once a month (the fourth Monday of the month) during the daytime. For more information and to indicate an interest, please talk to Drinda Kiner - 216-321-4359 or e-mail taxxman@core.com.

Identity

Important note: Congregational Meeting September 12, 2010 at 11:15 a.m. Grab a cup of coffee and get important updates about Grace Church.

Adult Education class resumes on September 19 with The Old Testament, a 24 session DVD formal class taught by Amy Jill Levine, professor at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. The 30 minute DVD lecture will be followed by a 45 minutes discussion period during a "Stone Salad" lunch. The salad greens and 2 types of dressing will be provided. You are invited to bring an ingredient to add. The salad that we make is what we eat during the discussion period. These lectures are oriented toward historical context and literary import, but do not avoid raising issues of religious concern. The goal is to provide richer insights into the literature that forms our bedrock. Come! If you cannot attend a session arrangements can be made to view the DVD. Reading the texts listed will enhance appreciation for the material. No sessions on Reformation Sunday and Congregational Meeting Sundays. The scheulde is as follows:

9/19, Lecture 13: The Bood of Judges, Part 1 (Judges 1-8)
9/26, Lecture 14: The Book of Judges, Part 2 (Judges 8-21)
10/3, Lecture 15: Samuel and Saul (I Samuel)
10/10, Lecture 16: King David (I Samuel 16-31; II Samuel; I Kings 1-2)
10/17, Lecture 17: From King Solomon to Preclassical Prophecy (I Kings 2-3; Kings 17)
10/24, Lecture 18: The Prophets and the Fall of the North (I Kings 16- II Kings 17; Amos; Hosea)
10/31, Reformation Sunday: No Class
11/7, Lecture 19: The Southern Kingdom (Isaiah; Deuteronomy; II Kings 18-23)
11/14, Lecture 20: Babylonian Exile (II Kings 24-25; Jeremiah; Isaiah 40-55; Ezekiel)
11/21, Congregational Meeting: No Class

For fun and mutual joy for all, with many thanks to Erica Popp (director) and David Sparkes (accompanist) everyone is invited to be part of a "pick-up" choir to support our informal worship. A very singable piece of music will be rehearsed at 9 a.m., before the morning worship and then sung during the Offertory. If you have questions about the choir please contact Erica at ekpopp@gmail.com.

Happy Birthday!
Ralph Spencer, 9/1
